I use levels all the time. Our progressive dies are designed in-house
using Autocad. The designers use color specific layers for different
features. ex 3/8-16 tapped hole is blue and on layer 17, while .3750
bored hole is green and on layer 18. Now this might be a 6 * 20 * 60
inch die shoe with hundreds of holes, so anything that helps is welcome
. The last one I did took 33 tools.2d is good enough for top and bottom
of a simple plate .
If you open a Solidworks assembly in MastercamX2 it will put each
component on a separate level. This might be what Jon is talking about .

Trying to manage Layers or Levels is a major PITA compared to using an
Assembly with Configurations.
Whats to manage? They are turned on or off.How would you use Solidworks configurations in this instance? Would you make a config so each set of holes would be the only features on the block? There would be as many of them as there are of layers in Autocad. I don't see how your comparing these two software features.
