has no other function, then by all means have your machinist draw
it. If however it has to function as part of a complex assembly,
say the engine in your car, then only a fool would assume that a
machinist knows enough about the whole process to correctly draw
this part. The fact that engineers often produce bad drawings
because they don't understand the machining process is no
different than the machinist thinking that they could produce
better drawings without knowing what a part does!

Very well put Gary.
Put me down for engineer too.
Absolutely.

John, Do you consider yourself and engineer, or a
machinist? I would probably consider you an engineer.
Honestly? I'm a smart ass.
I doubled at the University of Michigan in Mechanical Engineering and
Mathematics.
From one of your prior posts you said you served a German
type apprenticeship. I would think that you had some time
on the drafting board.
Can't draw on a board for ***, never could. U of M ended up waiving the 2
credit hour class - they politely called it AP - for my work experience.
Seemed fair to me, especially in light of the fact that my drafting skills
start at smudged and go dowm hill from there. I'm a lefty and couldn't keep
from dragging my paws all over a drawing. I can do something that passes in
the shop today without a computer but it ain't real purdy. Just useful. I've
seen hand drawn mold designs that were beautiful.
As for the German thing,
I did a 4000 hour tool and die apprenticeship that included an extra year in
Europe and the UK.
Krauss Maffie in Munich for a little more than 8 months and 3 months at ICI
in Manchester.
In my mind a journeyman machinist should be able to draw a
PART, and the drawing be able to go to the shop without
engineering help.
Ok, that's your take.
From a mold making perspective, a mold maker is a guy that can take a partprint and deliver a mold.
He can also work with the product designer as required to resolve features
that aren't moldable as designed without getting into a pissing contest.
An engineer should be responsible for the overall design and
do all the calculations for loads etc. for a complex
assembly such as a gasoline engine.
Yep.
Like yourself I served a comprehensive apprenticeship, with
a portion of my time spent on the board, back when dinosaurs
roamed the Earth, and they had drafting boards. I've
designed several complex pieces of equipment for customers
that were easy to manufacture, looked good, and functioned well.
Unfortunately the definition of a machinist has been
perverted in many cases to be someone who stands at the
control and punches the green button.
Maybe. Perhaps the "brand" needs a make over.
Did you get the red dung off the Vette?
Most of it.
You still up this
way?
Just rolled in to LA. 4 hours and 49 minutes door to door.
Brian's place?
Yeah, those Hawker parts have turned into a nice gig. I win't be running
them myself again. The code is tweaked and the fixtures and tooling are
dialed in. Bri will be running the next bunch himself.
I'll be up again in six weeks to start up another project. This one is an
entire product and the FAA is finishing up the PMA in the next couple of
weeks.
Behave yourself Young Man!
