FWIW, I did the same ZA download just a week ago and had no problems at all.
At one time I ran Iolo's System Mechanic and had problems with it as well. Iolo may be the culprit. I had to uninstall it here.
I run ZA and Norton AV. I had problems with Norton's *Suite* software and had to return to the std Norton AV where I have no problem.
If your machine is slowing down it may be a Regisrty problem that System Mechanic is not repairing.
The article below says that System Mechanic stops communication with browsers etc.

That's why I run ghost on all my drives (4) every two days & save on
another ups drive & also burn to dvd. Before installing new software I
run ghost. So I can put it all back like it was in 45 mins or less.
Handy if a hd bites the dust, plug in another & not even have to
format just put the ghost backup for that drive back on. Ghost runs
from a floppy.

I also use 2 USB portables to do backups onto. They are soooo easy to use them for backups.
