"What's ya'll thoughts on using surfacing in the creation and
modification of solids?"

It's a must have if you don't want parts that look like prismatic
blocks.

I frequently use a SolidWorks "Surface Sweep" and than a SolidWorks
"Surface Cut" to create a pleasing face on a prismatic solid.

I use SolidWorks Surface Split and then save all the resulting
separate bodies as individual part files and then make an assembly
because I like using the master model concept where it's appropriate.

At this point I use them everyday to make relatively simple parts that
look good.
