Follow-up on shop camera advice wanted thread.

As indicated I got the Fujifilm Finepix S700.

Some observations based on a little use [> 200 pictures] to date.

Although it is light weight for anyone who is used to a brass
body nikon it seems to take very good pictures.

The macro zoom feature will let you get in close enough to show a
special grind on a tool, although the flash is disabled.

The program that comes with the camera to download the pictures
is IMNSHO marginal at best and wants to load in automatically at
boot-up so it can tell when you attach the camera to begin the
download process.

Downloading from the camera to the computer is slow, and the
factory recommends the auxiliary powerpack.

You can take a few pictures on the internal memory but you will
want to purchase a XD memory card. Given the price, it appears
the 1 gig is the better choice.

I suggest that you buy the Olympus XD 1 gig as this gets you a
magic code number to unlock several features in the Olympus
photography program (art effects which you may never use with a
shop camera)

The Olympus program is a free download [c. 50 meg] which appears
to work with most any graphics files and includes raw format
processing.

This program has installation options which allows you to chose
if you want it to load and TSR at start-up, and chose between
albums and folder organization [for shop use chose folder]

==> Get the Olympus USB,->XD card reader. c. 20$. Much faster
and avoids wear and tear on the camera connection [about the size
of a pinhole]. You can also store the Olympus photo program on
an XD card. You will also need an "unzipper" of some kind [its a
zip file] or unzip and save the files. [about the same size]
Olympus P/N MAUSB-200
I got mine at Bradford Photo, but they are a Fayetteville [AR]

Note: if you google on MAUSB-200, Circuit City comes up at the
head of the list as a supplier. Check previous threads on
discussion of screw-job that CC gave their employees before
shopping there. (Price was 1$ higher at Bedfords)

Other observations:

I have taken a couple' hundred pictures, many of these "double
hits" in that the camera will take a flash picture and then
another one without flash. I am still on the original set of 4
alkaline AA cells. For my purposes it appears that using
alkaline AAs and not the rechargables is cost effective. A
double set of spares [8 total] occupies considerably less space
than the charger.

I purchased the "circular" polarizer, but its main use is
outdoors. It does kill reflections but not from metallic
surfaces.

Two other items that are worth the money.

When I purchased the camera from B & H [nice people to deal with]
I also purchased a German made [ B+W ] 46 mm rubber lens hood.
The B + W brand is a little more expensive, but the rubber stands
up. I had several cheaper rubber lens hoods for the Nikon and
Pentax fall apart fall apart, but the B+W's I bought years ago
are still flexible and shows no signs of cracking. [Time to
apply some Armor all?]

A skylight filter will protect the lens in the shop from splashes
and hot chips. You can leave the filter and lens hood on at all
times [suggested].

in this particular case I got the Tiffin [#3 from top], which
seems to be top quality.

me an email.
