Another Q or two if you don't mind; for turning would you use a
neutral tool or a positve rake?
Positive since you aren't regrinding. 4-8° is my recommendation. This
will cut into tool life a tad, depending on relief angle under the edge.
But, you get a very clean, nice cut with a few less hp required and a lot
less stress put into the part.
I wasn't planning on using a PCD for cut off. Do they work well
cutting off a solid (not hollow) part? I was worried about chipping as
the tool approaches center.
Should work but I've not tried it. Nature of our business we don't have
to cut off to center, but I see no reason it won't work. For the forgings
we do, where we are cutting a huge chunk off, I prefer the ISCAR cut off
blades and holder, pcd tipped of course. I'm hanging out of the holder
about 75 mm and feeding at 0.4 mm/rev at 3500 RPM until near cut off,
then I drop to 0.15mm/rev and 200 rpm at the time it falls off so it
doesn't fly all over the machine and break other tools. This is a heavily
interrupted cut by the way.

You can't 'idiot proof' anything....every time you try, they just make
better idiots.
