There are definitely sites that interface to usenet via web
interfaces. There used to be some that did that in the bike racing
world.
As for this group: I've only been reading it for a little over a year
so I don't have a sense of the history, but after reading Kirk's
description, it seems like this group and some other tech groups have
followed a similar path. At first usenet was only accessible by hard
core techies, but as the internet became more ubiquitious, it seems as
if there was a correlation between it and the Off Topic nutjobs.
Plus, people get jaded. At first usenet seemed like a great way to
communicate with people from all over the world in a way that was
never before possible and now sometimes it seems like it's a waste of
valuable time.
Still, I like reading this group. There's some nutjobs here, but there
are also some very smart people. I'm not saying that because I'm
relatively new to CNC - I've been following politics/history for my
entire life (it was one of my majors in college too) and some of the
commentary here on global economic issues is really high quality
stuff. Some of the people here, besides being intelligent, also have
first-person, hands-on, everyday experiences with the rapidly changing
world of manufacturing. There's plenty of industry analysts sitting
around in their offices in Wall Street that have less relevant things
to say even though they get paid for studying it. They're too Ivory
Tower-ed.
