downward to accommodate bad years. Whereas a raise is semi-permanent

Profit sharing plans, if done correctly, will help the bottom line.
People know that any money they save the company, or anything they do
that increases profits and reduces scrap will result in a little more
money in the pocket at sharing time.
Bullshit--ya gotta have proper accounting in place ( good luck ) so as to
pass along profits in the form of higher wages to only those that were
responsible for helping to increase the bottom line.
Otherwise, might just as well to have a union to prescribe the bonus level.
Been there, done that.
