Jim Rowe used to post in here about the latest tooling trends.
I miss his posts.
I saw Jim about a month or so ago. He's doing good. He showed me some
new Swiss tooling I hadn't seen before. We did a medical table top
show that hardly anyone showed up for.
Dan:
Now I think that's really cool. I wonder how many people in here
have met other a.m.cnc members in real life. Time for another patented BB
survey, it seems. LOL
I've met several people that post here or have posted here in the past. But I do a lot of machine shows so I'm easy to find. I enjoy meeting people and putting a face with the name. Although I have a terrible memory for faces and names and it usually takes me a second or two to put it together.
Speaking of Jim, he writes a column for Today's Machining World magazine. In this months edition he is involved in a minor dispute over the proper angle for a spot drill with another guy that used to post here. I'm betting neither one knows the other from here. The tone is a little ugly which is kind of surprising since I know both guys and they are both otherwise likeable people that I enjoy talking too. The other thing is they are both probably right. They are just looking at the issue from different perspectives.
IIRC, you did some test hole a while back in an effort to dtermine the best way to start a true hole. Do you remember the results of that?
If you're interested this months edition is here:

It's 8.8 meg. The back and forth is on page 10. Jim's column is further in. I think it's called "Ask the Shop Doc" or something like that.
So what is the proper angle for a spot drill? The one that you have mounted in the toolholder?
John
