Are used Buells still more common than rabbits in your area? How
much do they go for in running condition? I'm looking for a donor.

Yeah, they are common as rabbits.
If you're doing the chopper thing, the most desirable model is a '98
S3(which was carbed 101HP "thunderstorm") motor. WP inverted forks,
etc.. I bought mine in '03 for $4200 in showroom new condition from a
Buell employee with about 9K on the clock.
Most are going for $3500 to $4500 in good running condition.
M2 Cyclones were always carbed. But have conventional forks.
X1 Lightnings have inverted forks, 101HP motor, but EFI
The XB series are going for bigger money. About $4500-$6000 used.
Very cool. Might be a comfortably rideable chopper in the future, but
the current plan is more along the lines of something rad that will
catch somebody's wallet. It seems the price for an engine is the same
with or without a bike attached. Any local newspapers with online
classifieds?

You could also check the local craiglists.
By your IP#, you're in NJ. So check the motorcycle classifieds in your area.

The 97 and older Buells had a lower HP motor, but would still make good chopper candidates.
You could do something completely different, and buy a 1999-2002 Buell S3 or X1, and keep the side draft EFI on it. All you'd have to do is drill and weld a spot on the front pipe for the Oxygen sensor.
The XB series bikes have a down draft throttle body, which wont work.
Also, if the ads state PM or Performance Machine wheels, that's a good option. They are wider, polished aluminum wheels, and CAN fit a 200 series tire on 'em.
