@p79g2000cwp.googlegroups.com:

I have two very sharp thick chips that I picked off a very large
Cincinatti Planer Mill, they have cut nice neat holes in my pocket and
put some very interesting designs in my thigh. However they are from a
piece of tooling from a competitor that I am trying to Reverse
Engineer. I am working on designing a new piece of equipment which uses
this tooling.

So since I don't own one of those fancy new spectrographic pistol
looking metal analysis tools I would like to find out what type of
steel these chips are made from. I think spark testing is a huge waste
of time. I will be getting in touch with a few testing labs on monday,
but does anyone have any experience with this? What can I expect to
pay? Or do you have any alternatives? Before anyone suggests it, no I
cannot ask the competitor.
Thanks in a advance.

Greg

Your nearest university should be able to do a metal analysis for a
nominal fee.

You can't 'idiot proof' anything....every time you try, they just make
better idiots.

I contacted my local testing laboritory and they can do it and it will
cost around $150 for a spectrographic analysis then alloy
identification. Pretty cool.
