illustrating a mental process, conscious or unconscious, called
"Confirmation Bias" that seems to afflict those that are of a political
extremist bent.

Looked like a prime counterexample to me.
Actually, it explained your own modus operandi with remarkable
accuracy. Especially in the areas of politics, machining, science, and
personal interaction.
