Re: What happend to elecrical cars?

Can you make this car cheap enough that someone would want to buy it with
its shortcomings in preference to a gasoline-powered vehicle?

If you stay away from cutting edge technology, the answer is yes. Granted,
this limit's their range, and charge times, but it does make the vehicle
affordable if mass produced.

Or else people will find out what it costs to replace the batteries, junk
the POS, and never, ever do _that_ again.

A new battery pack is expensive, even if we stay with lead acid. There
simply isn't any getting around that. Even with increased demand, the price
is not likely to drop on this mature technology. What's even worse is the
fact that mistreating the batteries will cause a very premature death. If
EVs are to work, with our present technology, people must be educated in
their maintenance.

The average American is used to their gasoline car slowly leaking their
funds away. They pay for oil changes, tune ups, expensive gasoline,
transmission repairs and other items a few hundred dollars at a time. Most
Americans don't have any idea what it costs them per mile to drive their
car. If they did, they would know that an EV is cheaper to operate than a
gasoline car. Even with expensive battery changes every few years.
