I think all your life you've missed a rather important concept.
Draw almost any contour.
Offset it by the tool's radius (as long as no radius on the contour
is less than the tool's radius).
Place the tool's radius on the offset curve anywhere.
It is now touching to the part's shape *somewhere*, perhaps in more
than one place.
Such ignorant and arrogant twaddle. Everyone knows that.
You're the one that's missed the important concept. On a lathe every
tool has a different center point for its radius. If you can't do simple
math and are CAM dependent, you can still write a program using the
front edge of the radius for Z and the end edge of the radius for X
using your CAM system. That way setting up the lathe is far easier and
the numbers in the program correspond to the drawing.
To infer that this method doesn't work for some magical geometry that
exists only in your mind is insane.
To encourage people to program a lathe in a way in which nobody
programs, and is more complicated and prone to errors isn't very
helpful.
You couldn't program one simple .010" corner break on a 1.0" diameter
without making multiple mistakes. Including, I might add, programming
the Z end point from the front edge of the tool. That mistake just goes
to show how much more intuitive WSP is on a lathe versus programming
from the cetner of the radius.
Also, how do I program a tool that has no radius from the center of the
radius?
