Question on Software Policy

This is an interesting situation.
At this point, I do not wish to disclose
the name of this software company, however,
it is a major player in the marketplace.
In 1998 we purchased some CAM sofware from a
supplier. We purchased both a "seat" and a "home
seat". The "home seat", also called "personal seat
license" was offered at a discount. The home seat
was to be used for off site work and not at our
As with most software companies we paid a service
contract every year for telephone support and "free"
software updates when they became avalible.
In 1999-2001 we got into some bad economic
times, and I was unable to re-new the service agreement.
Our software version was fine at the time, and we got
by without any new updates.
About a year and a half ago, we were offered to get
back into our service contract at a discount. Times
were better, and we took advantage of the offer.
We also added an additional modual, for more capabilites.
They sent us out two new keys ( hardware protection dongles) for the new
softare update and new capabilities.
All was well for about a year, and then about a week ago we could no longer
run the software on one of the computers.
It seems, (unknown to me ) they had built into one of the dongles a timer
that stopped the software from running after a year on the personal seat
I was told that to continue to run the personal seat, we
would need to continue the service contract. The reason
they started this policy is to keep the personal seat keys from showing up
on the open market.
Wait a minute ! This was never part of the deal, and
never told to me. I should have the OPTION of
renewing my software matinence contract without
it effecting the software I had already purchased.
I believe there are two mutually exclusive contracts
at work here. One is the software agreement, the
other is the matinence agreement.
