Not finishing my degree was easily the biggest mistake I've made. What
degree is of no importance. I'm damn good at what I do. I always advance
easily at any company I've been with. The trouble is getting in the front
door, and not starting at the bottom. My current job is a good example. I
applied for a design position but didn't get it. I did however get some
part time work in the shop, and consequently the design job when they saw
what I could do. I'm not happy here. I just finished the longest two weeks
of my entire career, out in the field fixing crap designed by others,
because my broad skill set enables me to do that. Meanwhile the engineer
who doesn't know crap sits in his office designing more crap that won't
work. I do get to design stuff, and my stuff both flies through the shop
and works well in the field. I keep getting more money too. This week they
offered to pick up 80% of my wife's medical insurance instead of none. I
expect to make about $70K this year with my Christmas bonus.
None of this motivates me though. I do the best I can all the time, because
I'm driven by my own standards not the company's. The engineer who sucks
needs to be fired, for the benefit of the entire company. They won't fire
him though, because they are nice people, who can't see that hurting
everyone is not nice. The bonus system sucks. I get good bonuses but it is
totally arbitrary, so your pay could vary a lot, at the whim of management.
We all work hard, because we do everything the hard way. That upsets me,
because I've experienced systems that work so I know exactly how much time I
waste every day. The only good thing about this job is that I got to add
some important stuff to my resume, like Allen Bradley PLC programming, and
Solid Edge 3D modeling.
Given a degree, in any field I'd be able to get past the 'degree required'
crap for lots of jobs that I'm qualified for. Instead I have to waste time
finding side doors I can sneak through so I can work my way up. I AM
actively looking for a new job!
