Cliff:

I had a problem as well with John's original parasolid file. That's
why I asked him offline for an iges version, which opened with no
problem. His original file could have been corrupted or have been a
newer version with features that older programs weren't able to easily
deal with.

Have you downloaded the free Rhino yet and opened his file?
