Elaborating a dissertation about Post Processing in CAD CAM Softwares

Hi there I'm intrested in Elaborating a dissertation about Post
Processing in CAD CAM Softwares.

I'm studing Mechanical Enegineering and i need a dissertation to
complete my degree.
I was talking to the professor that is going to supervise my
dissertation and he brought the idea of making that kind of software
for one of the machines in the laboratory.

I would like to know what do i need so that i can accomplish that.

I'm afraid that it is a fiddly job... i know that i have to use G-CODE
but i really don't know anything about how post processing works, what
are the filetypes that I'm going to work on, in what language i should
do all the compiling e.t.c.

I would really need a hand from where i should start and what kind of
books should I use
