I've got just the thing for you, if you're interested. Its a small "brain
box". The guts of it is a "divide by" chip that looks at pulses from an
encoder on the spindle. The chip then divides the incoming pulses by the
amount on the thumb wheel and outputs that number of pulses to a step motor
driver, or step servo driver. This was all developed by an Electronics
engineer, Don Foreman, based on a prototype gear hobber from John Stevenson.
I have a second generation prototype board all soldered up and ready to go.
Tested in the lab, by Don, but not yet put on a machine. Contact me off list
if this is what you want.
I'm doing the exact same thing on my mill with a Yusa dividing head that has
a spiral milling attachment. It turns out that my CNC control, Camsoft, can
do the "divide by" function so I don't really need the brainbox. I feel duty
bound to make sure this little brainbox gets a good trial because Don has
put so much time into it at my request. AND it has a lot of applications for
just your type project.
