Do not laugh at wire edm for keyways. I do this all the time in short
to medium run aerospace parts. The sizes are often not standard, which
would necessitate custom tooling for broaching, and that usually is not
in the budget to amortize over short runs, or the lead times. They also
often have size and positional tolerances that do not lend themselves
to broaching. The Inconel 718 we use a lot of wears out tool steel very
quickly.
