IRC SERVER PROBLEMS

To the regulars/visitors of the IRC server.

It appears at the moment, like I have possibly suffered a hard drive
failure due to a power loss. I cannot at the moment get grub to do
anything, or find anything. Looks like possibly the MBR (master boot
record) on that hard drive was damaged.
To date:
I have attempted to utilize the rescue cd, it chokes.
I have attempted to use the 'update' option of the Fedora install to re-
load grub in a good config, the install chokes.
I have attempted to get grub to do it's thing....it chokes.
The last error I saw before the meltdown was a 'unexpected error reading
from block xxxx from hdc1'.....after an almost sucessful, normal boot
from the power failure.

At the moment, my dwindling list of options seems to be:
a) Attempt to low-level format that 3 yr old 40gb drive, and start from
scratch
b) Format the 10 gb, but 8 year old drive that is loaded with W2K in a
dual-boot role in that box and start from scratch
c) Remove the 15 gb 3rd drive from this pc, install it in the server box,
format it and start from scratch.

In any event, it looks like a 'start from scratch' is included. I will
not start on this until morning. Hopefully this can be resolved before
the end of the day tomorrow.

Note: The FTP server resides on a different box, which is operating
normally, so all the users files on it should be in good shape.

Note 2: The server box will be getting upgraded in the very near future.
It is currently an old PII 450mhz, 192mb RAM POS that I threw together
from spare parts, sans the 40 gb hdd. It will be going to an AMD XP1700+
at 1.5ghz with 512mb RAM.

You can't 'idiot proof' anything....every time you try, they just make
better idiots.
