I wonder - was it the new card, or the antenna direction that fixed
it ? With an extremely narrow 8 deg beamwidth, you could easily miss
everything due to mispointing...

good point, I didn't know the beamwidth was 'that' narrow.
the first card I tried was a d-link dwl-g510 vA1. I couldn't seem to pick up anything with
this card despite trying lots of different point directions with the grid.
The next card was a dwl g510 vC2, which was a bit better - a few bars of signal strength
appeared from one direction but I'm still not that impressed, although I've yet to locate
the the antenna properly. At the moment I've got it on a tripod stand and trying different
directions indoors -pointing it mainly out of the window. I haven't got the funds yet for
the bits to mount it properly outside.

Which leads me to my next question (if anybody knows....)
is there a particular PCI card that works better than others when connected directly to
these grid antennas?

I don't think the d-link cards I have are much cop at all.
