A project for this evening, when I get the photos. When I tried to
talk to it via ethernet before, all I got was "a network cable is
unplugged" or whatever the XP equivalent is.

That means no Ethernet connection, making it pointless to try anything
else. Possibilities:
1. wrong type of cable (crossover versus standard).
2. Defective cable.
3. Port is dead.
