How do you know? You'd be very well advised to check.

There is usually no way to check. The network owner that is not intending to open their network to other has many ways of letting others know that he does not wish others to use his network. It's like a gas station that offers free air and water. They usually don't restrict this service to only customers, but if they do, they can put up a sign, require the use of tokens, etc. However, unlike a wireless network, providing free air and water does have a nominal cost associated with it.

The house with the open door _does_ make a good analogy - because opening it
does not (necessarily) constitute an invitation. A person entering the
house should still make sure they're welcome. If the door's open on a hot
sunny day, it probably just means they're trying to catch a breeze. If
there's a loud party going on inside, you may well be welcome to walk right
in. It's exactly the same with a wireless network.

Very weak analogy.
