OK, so even if the purpose of the images is to use ALT tags (which I hadn't realised) then perhaps the visual benefit of using is an accidental discovery rather than a clever and (for me) effective way of holding attention within a long block of text.

And if you have an image then why ever not bung an ALT tag onto it after all, it can't do any harm even if it night have no benefit.
