Actually it can. Example- The way you are acting is like a child. Way
stands alone and means "manner" or in a way.:-)
"In a way" and "way" aren't substitutes. Try it.
(yes they may mean the same thing, but you can't swap them in an
otherwise identical sentence)
Did not say subsitutes, but the sentence above "way" stands alone and
means
manner or "in a way".
It doesn't. But I'll stop trying to convince you :-)
Ok. You think how you want and I think how I want on that sentence,:-)
I also went and spoke to Ella last night and mentioned it. She said a lot
has changed throughout the years what was slang when she was a child is
used
more now and not thought of as being bad to say. Sayings and things have
been picked up more from the Americans as we have been here in this area
for
a while. Like Halloween is getting more popular and they sell decorations
in
the stores and pass out candy now in a few areas. They use to not do
that.
Anyway, she would have understood what was being said. Which is why I
asked
Sha to ask the teacher as we needed a proper answer, because a lot of the
speaking here is improper Deutsch. The first time I lived(actually it is
the
2nd as I was here as a infant to 18 months also:-)) in Germany I met
some
neighbors parents who lived in E. Germany. His Dad's comment was that W.
Germany was losing the proper speech and that the east even with their
problems at least some values and traditions remained entact. Now they
are
all blended in.:-) Still as you get further east you can tell some
difference.
Imagine the changes in the Dutch language then - all English language
TV here is subtitled instead of synchronized. The Germans don't get
much exposure to the English language (except perhaps for the areas
where the Americans managed to get Halloween going ;-)), and still
they find their language changes because of it.
Yeah, that is here also. They do have English language TV subtitled at times
with some shows and movies. I like watching them without though. Love to
hear the voices on some of them. Some match pretty good and others I am
trying to wonder why on earth they chose such a voice for that person.:-)
Very humorous really.:-)
I have tried to get my children into learning more languages also. I told
them you just never know when you might be able to use it. Please
sometimes
it can be an easy grade.:-) Anyway, my daughter went to a German
preschool
grew up for 7 years in Germany. Plus had 4 years of German Language in
school. She can not speak to much of it now. Many of the children she
played
with of course could speak English or they just still played. To go
through
formal training and forget most of it is beyond me.
I have the same though. I learnt French (4 yrs) and German (2 yrs) in
school - all the German I know these days, is from Krimis. My French
is virtually non-existent. I learnt Portuguese in 3 months, then
'perfected' it in 5 years time, and I'm already noticing I lose words
cause I don't use them daily. I also learnt Hebrew, used it regularly
for about 6 months, but now I can't even remember how to say that I
used to speak it. (I can say I don't speak it, but not that I used to
be able to.)
Weirdest: when I got back from 6 months abroad, I often had to think
really hard to find Dutch words to express myself.
Yeah, I can only remember small fragments of Spanish. But I didn't take it
as long. Just very little. Now, I admire you more for doing the others also.
I am sure that some will come back to you.:-)
I guess she thought she
would never use it or need it. She didn't listen to me because look where
she is now.:-)
I don't know, where is she now?
Living with me. She had to have help when she got pregnant.
My son Sha didn't want to take Deutsch. I told him he needed to in the
Mother's firm way we do things.:-) We are here in this country and it
helps
him know and understand more as in the class they also learn the customs.
Does he not speak German then?
Little now from taking it. :-) He is doing much better.:-)
By "take Deutsch", I take it that you sent them to an American school?
Yes, had to. One reason we left Germany in 1991. So they needed to have
schooling done that way. My oldest son had just started school and needed to
be taught American as we were going back to the states. Jen did however
attend German preschool.:-) Sha was just a year old.
My children did attend British schools and American schools when we lived in
the UK. My daughter had to finish up high school to gain a diploma. Which is
2 years more than the UK schools. She has her GCSEs and a high school
diploma. My oldest son was switched back so he would be caught up for the
American system, plus he wanted to play American Football, prior to moving
back to the states. My youngest Sha remained in the British schools until we
moved back.
Q: why do Americans do that? The quickest way to learn the local
language is for the kids to go to the local school. I can imagine
sending them to American school if you're only in the country for a
short time, but I think you've been here quite long, not exactly
"temporary"?
Yes, it is temporary. They have to be taught in the American schools so when
they get switched back. To make sure the other schools will credit them for
the schooling. Does that make sense now? Actually the way it is Sha would
almost be done with school in Germany, but not the way American's do. He
needs to stay in American schools because we are going back. It is the
system that is the problem. Sha had such a hard time switching to American
schools after the UK. Same with my oldest son. Jen had a little bit of a
hard time but not as much as most of her schooling was from American anyway.
One they are on a different level as far as what something is to be taught.
For a few things Sha was behind, then others he was ahead when going to
school in Va. The stuff he was behind un caused him to strugle and have to
get held back a year. So there was a whole year wasted. My oldest son, well
it hurt him worse as he was to far behind when he switched for the grade and
age. I wish he never went to the British school. He might have not given up
on school and finished. At the age of 16 they can drop out in the states if
they want to and not be made by the government/states to stay in.
Are you fluent and can write all 3?
Yes for English and Dutch, obviously,
Yep, I kind of figured the Dutch was a given.:-)
And English demonstrated? ;-)
Well yes.:-)
and almost for Portuguese. I
regularly have to think about the spelling of more difficult words,
and often maken mistakes with the article, since Portuguese is (like
German) one of those languages where it matters if an object is
masculine of feminine :\
Yeah I hate that, because I picked up the words without learning it. I am
trying to re-learn a lot by memorizing it the proper way with having Der,
Das, and Die in front of it. Not easy after learning it the wrong way.:-)
For the most part though I have found that when those who really try and
speak the language it is better than just speaking English. We are in
this
country and we need to stop trying to become dependant on stores and
restaurants knowing English.
The Dutch are used to tourists speaking German, French, or English,
and we usually try to converse with them in their language, as
expecting them to know Dutch is just plain silly.
Really wasn't referring to the tourists. Was referring to the American's who
come here and don't even try. Some of them hate the whole time here. The
problem is they didn't experience Germany. I would hate it also if I stayed
home all the time or live in base housing.:-) I look at living here as one
long vacation.
Immigrants OTOH, are supposed to learn Dutch, and it amazes me that
you've been in Germany for this long, and still can't convince your
son he should learn the local language. (unless I misunderstood, and
he does speak German now?)
As they should IMO. Well we have only been here a year. He is convinced that
learning it can help, also he has now got some German friends. I had to
encourage that also. They help each other. His friend Lisa has to learn
English in school. :-) He speaks some. After this year I would think that he
out of all my children will be the best at it.:-)
<snip>
Except when some people change the meanings of words and "bad" becomes
good.
Or when a phrase of - My bad comes to play. :-)
That's not just in English, that happens everywhere.
I remember when I was a teen, the latest word was "unwise", meaning
'very cool[1]'. My dad complained that that was just "too crazy", with
which we agreed, since "too crazy" also meant 'way cool'. These days
the cool word is "fat cool". Don't ask me who thought that one up :\
________
[1] I suppose cool itself already is one of those words that got a
different meaning over time, as some people are referred to as both
hot and cool, and none of it has to do with temperature ;-)
Cool and hot is changed in all languages I suppose. :-) Phat is the term
"fat" which means good, unless it has changed. It is like at times I think
new words are being thought up as much as new insects are found.:-)
