I worried about this with our site too. I think if you read back the text
and it makes sense to your users, then it should be okay. Search engines
don't set an arbitrary number for this, but a statistical analysis of your
page would probably be a good indicator of whether your text was actually
readable or not. Those hidden links at the bottom are asking for a spanking
though.
After spending 25.6 seconds reading up on SEO and from a few responses I've
had to questions here, I've come to the conclusion that it's a mugs game and
that the best way to get a good ranking is to be a good site. Where "good"
means useful and/or interesting for your users within whatever knowledge
domain you are specialising in.
btw: number 5? Psychology studies show that the eye doesn't automatically
start at the top of a list. Most often it starts in the middle and then
scans to the top. So imho you are at the optimal point ;).
