Re: Google keywords and 301 redirects

Suppose that googlebot reads and indexes all of the above mentioned
pages.

Here's a question.

If a user searches for dh364ngk 200a 600v 3ph fusible switch, and if
google
considers my pages worthy enough to me mentioned in SERPS, what URL
would the user see?

This:
http://www.mysite.com/things/dh364ngk-200a-600v-3ph-fusible-switch.html

or this: http://www.mysite.com/things/ejksfdhkljh.html

The latter URL will be listed IF neither of the pages existed before the
301 redirect was implemented. If there is a chance that Googlebot may have
already visited both pages before you put the 301 redirect in, then only G
(no, not God) knows what will happen. I've seen three situations on my
sites:

#1 if the shorter URL was visited first, it will get listed, the other one
dropped (or never actually included)

#2 Vice versa - the longer SEO-friendly URL was visited first and gets
indexed. The shorter one gets dropped (this is a rare case though because
people usually do SEO as an afterthought. I know, not you, Igor, but the
public in general ;-)

#3 Googlebot reads both, tries to decide which one is better and fails
because they are identical. Then it DROPS BOTH and goes away in tears
never to come back because Big Daddy said he's not allowed to.

If both pages are brand new never before seen by Google and both are on
the same domain, I would do 302 redirect instead. I know, these days doing
302 is like playing with fire, but this is the only way you can hope that
the first URL that gets liked to is indexed. Pretty obviously you have to
then make sure you don't accidentally link to the shorter URL and don't
let anyone link to it.

Good luck!
