Not that I know of. I think I remember being annoyed.

And, which search engine was the first to do this?

I think yahoo was the first to take money for 'express submissions' whereby they would put you into their directory within a month if you paid them $200 or something. But it wasn't seperate advertising.

I think Lycos had the first seperate ads (I could be very wrong!) but I'm pretty sure all the search engines were carrying advertising of one form or another long before google even went out of beta.
