Also, if you write about something that you like, AdSense is likely to show ads that tell you how you can get rid of that thing you like. Or vice versa. This can be embarassing.
E.g.: I wrote about a tobacco offering by a Maya in Guatemala. AdSense showed ads about how to quit smoking.
A few days ago I blogged about the passing away of North American civil rights legend Rosa Parks.
What do you think AdSense did? Filled the ad spots with ads for tooth whitener because the word "white" was found in the text.
Or because of the word "black"? Oh, something is black, it probably wants to be white!
That's how intelligent AdSense is for you.
I should add that my pages are in Danish and in English.
This is my experience so far: AdSense begins by having a wild guess at what my page is about with a very concrete ad that targets one or two specific words on the page (in my case nearly always horrendously off the point), then after a few of days it goes for general content on my page and puts the same ads on that are seen on most other pages on my blog. These are acceptable, the first ones not.
After giving it a little thought, I think the reason why the same few ads end up showing on all of my pages may be that AdSense removes the ads that people don't click on and sticks to the ones that people click on.
After a couple of days, when noone has clicked on the Rosa Parks tooth whitener ad, AdSense gives up on guessing at the page content, and thus reverts its ads to the general theme of the blog, which in past experience has generated a few clicks.
I should add that I don't make any money on AdSense. I am just curious as to how it works because I use the AdWord advertiser's programme.
