I have deleted numerous pages using just robots.txt.

You may have problems if the page is deleted, but you have set a redirect
to not loose visitors. Then you may need a temporary page. 

It won't work to just delete a page and set a 301 redirect in an htaccess
file?


AFAIR if the redirect (or series of) ends with 200 Google decides that
the page still exists and as such can't be removed from index.
