I need Access, Excel and Word and also need to work

No. A license is normally for just one computer.

Comments on which software to get, and whether to have as
OEM or off the shelf appreciated.

Have a look at openoffice: http://openoffice.org/. It depends a lot on what you actually want to do with Word and Excel how good a replacement it is.

If the "moving on to databases" means Access: bad choice. I recommend
having a look at MySQL (or PostgreSQL).

The thing is, I will be working on a site that is built in ASP
with a MS-Access database.

As already suggested by John Bokma, any web application that depends on MS-Access is a big no-no.

I have no technical knowledge of databases and plan on
learning as I go along.

Sincerely, if you stick with the MS-Access route, you are about to waste *lots* of your time. (days? ... weeks? ... months? ...)

Consider migrating the information to a proper database designed for web applications.

Quickly.
