Until recently I've only worked in HTML and CSS I'm now moving on to databases and feel it's also time to start learning XML I'm about to buy a new PC system and would like opinions on what software to get with it. I need Access, Excel and Word and also need to work with ASP. It looks to me like Office 2003 Pro is my best option with XP Pro as the OS. I will probably buy a laptop at the same time and believe if I buy the software, rather than have it bundled with the PC I am licensed to install it on both?
No. A license is normally for just one computer.
Comments on which software to get, and whether to have as OEM or off the shelf appreciated.
Have a look at openoffice: http://openoffice.org/. It depends a lot on what you actually want to do with Word and Excel how good a replacement it is.
If the "moving on to databases" means Access: bad choice. I recommend having a look at MySQL (or PostgreSQL).
The thing is, I will be working on a site that is built in ASP with a MS-Access database.
As already suggested by John Bokma, any web application that depends on MS-Access is a big no-no.
I have no technical knowledge of databases and plan on learning as I go along.
Sincerely, if you stick with the MS-Access route, you are about to waste *lots* of your time. (days? ... weeks? ... months? ...)
Consider migrating the information to a proper database designed for web applications.
Quickly.
