I guess I must be evil then, but most of the viewers of this site seem
to like to have the second page.
The problem with 'target="_blank"' is that the users who like it that
way, already have it as an option - they can simply ctrl- or cmd-click
on a link to open it in a new window.
Conversely, using it means that users who want links to open in the
*same* window will no longer have that option. (I have no idea why
browser makers don't supply an "open in this window" option, but they
don't.)
We presented this at our semi annual
meeting in San Luis Obispo and asked those who were interested which
kind of presentation they preferred.
If you're trying to honor user preferences, kudos to you for that! But
you need to understand, browsers are already capable of doing so for
*every* user. Left to their own devices, they can open links in the same
window, or in a new one, whichever the user wants to do.
You have every right to use target if you want, of course - it's your
site. But claiming that you're doing so based on respect for your users'
preferences rings a little hollow IMHO, when in fact what you're doing
is taking away their ability to choose what they prefer, and dictating
your own preference instead.
