No need for special software in windows - you just need to change the registry value to check the time server more frequently. Google is your friend on this one.

I have a theory that all the crystals that get rejected from the watch industry end up on motherboards. Even if you buy a watch at the dollar store it keeps better time than a motherboard crystal. Also there is a problem that the inside of the computer case is either fairly hot (when the machine is on) or room temp (when the machine is off), so the crystal is going to run at 2 different rates (and avg out differently if you change the duty cycle).

Recently encountered a strange prob. when I set up a machine as a dual boot OSX (Mac) and Windows - OSX (and every other operating system on earth) expects the internal BIOS clock to be GMT, Windows wants it to be local time, so the 2 operating systems fight w. each other on setting the onboard clock.

because they are rubbish, cheap crystals, cheap m/boards, made in the millions having an accurate clock is not a requirement, practically every computer I have had have bad clocks.

currently I use Ubuntu which syncs the clock once a day I think, on windows I used a program that I cannot remember the name of, Frank put me on to it a few years back, works quite well.
