That must be it! Afaik, it's the magnetic component of radio waves that
such watches (and clocks) pick up. The antenna is extremely likely to be
a little rod (probably rectangular cross-section) of ferrite with a coil
wound around it, and probably tuned by a capacitor (if intended to
receive on only one frequency).to the station's frequency. I'd expect a
metal case to attenuate (weaken) a 60 (or ~77?) kHz signal strongly; it
must pass through the dial. (Now, if the dial is metal, I'm totally
baffled -- mystified...:) )

Nicholas, you have focused my attention on the dial in respect of radio waves attenuation.
Dial in this waveceptor is not metallic. As the watch is light powered with solar cells under the dial, the dial itself can't be metal. And as you have mentioned, because of metal case and back it can't be metal as no radio waves could reach the receiver.

My daily wear watch is an Oceanus Titanium. The case, back and band are Titanium and the dial itself is either the solar cell or a transparent covering over the actual cell. It, too, has the ability to receive WWV signals and according to its indicator, receives a very strong signal at least daily.

I dug out the booklet that came with the watch and it is specific about how to position the watch for maximum reception. The watch is to be positioned with the face upward and the 12:00 indicator toward the approximate source of the radio signal. The watch is to not be face down or on its side, and again, the 12:00 position should face the transmitter tower. This tells me that the internal antenna is near the 6:00 position and reception is through the face of the watch. Pointing the 12:00 position toward the source, face up, would expose an antenna near the 6:00 position toward an antenna.
