The problem with most old, broken pocket watches is that you can find a
similar complete and working example for much less than what it would cost
to source or fabricate parts to fix the broken ones. I guess if it were
signed by Tompion it might be worth the time and money to fix.
The market is a strange thing - some indifferent mass produced Rolex from
the 1950's is worth a fortune if certain words are printed on the dial in
red, but a handmade watch that is 200 years old is worth a pittance. In
general, pocket watches are undervalued by the market - beautifully
decorated and precise American pocket watches go for under $1000 while
modern Patek wristwatches whose finish is not their equal go for tens of
thousands.
That´s people´s perception. Already in those gone years, imported
"Swiss Made" watches assembled with U.S. made movements would fetch
higher prices than the 100% U.S. made ones.
