The "fanciful" use of the word metal is what led me to believe this was at one time a trademark. You cannot get a trademark for "descriptive" words - if your product consists of blue colored stones you cannot trademark "Blue Stone" because then no one else could us it to describe blue stones. But since the product is not actually metal, you could trademark "Blue Metal" for a stone product (or vice versa).
Blueing gives only very minimal corrosion protection unless it is oiled also (this is what gun owners do). Chemically, it is another form of iron oxide - one that occupies the same volume as pure iron (vs. the familiar red oxide (aka rust) which occupies more space and thus causes the iron object to fall apart). Once the oxide coating forms, it is supposed to block further contact with the air to iron and prevents any further reactions, but the coating is very thin and does not resist wear or scratching (it works for watch hands because they are protected under the crystal). How have these watch cases held up? How old are they? I can't recall ever seeing one.

Do you know why crushed rock is called "blue metal" in OZ? It seems to be an OZ only meaning. Perhaps it was a trade name at one point?
no idea, it may have been a trade name, while the rock does have a bluish colour and is quite hard, it certainly is not metal.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluestone Crushed bluestone is used for paving around here, generally as a base for blacktop but you'll see bluestone driveways and walks on occasion. Blued steel was sometimes used for watch cases, I have a few.
