Re: any clockmakers on the group?

If by clockmaker you mean someone who repairs, then yes there are
several here. My recommendation for a regulator clock movement would
be one of the American company clocks. Seth Thomas is fairly common,
so I suppose you could strip the movement from an existing clock and
recase it. To each his own on that measure I suppose. If I were
looking for a wall regulator I would go for something like a Gilbert
#9 and keep it in the knockout case.

You might also attend a few of the NAWCC regional meets and possibly
become a mmember. The Mart magazine can be a good resource.

Hi All,

Usually I see mostly watch posts, just wondering if there is a
clockmaker on the group.

I own several clocks, a few Americans (Gilbert and Ansonia, both
mantle), a French, and two Germans.  The Germans (a Winterhalder long
case and a Junghans gallery) are by far the best performing of the two
clocks.

I'm thinking of selling the French (a Vedette wall) and picking up
another German, and am looking for recommendations.

I'd like to pick up a time only (no strike or chime) regulator,
preferably wall style, with a deadbeat escapement. I want to buy the
best movement I can, even if the case is ugly (e.g. highly decorated) as
I'll probably have it re-cased in an arts & crafts case custom made for it..

I've admired the Becker movements, but don't know enough about them, and
am not sure about the feasibility of getting a deadbeat in a wall
movement.  If I can't is there an alternative escapement that is
recommended for very high accuracy in a wall (preferably weight driven,
not spring driven) clock?  I'm pretty committed to German make (nice
thick components and plates for long life) since I've had the best
success with those in the past.

Any thoughts or recommendations from clockmakers and collectors alike
would be welcome.

Best,

Alan
