We are way OT, but those kind of forecasts of future production vs. energy
needs have been made many times in the past and they were always wrong -
changes in technology allow additional extraction from existing fields and
permit drilling in areas that were once considered inacessible and at the
same time, the uses of petroleum become more efficient (cars get higher
mileage, light bulbs become fluorescent, etc.). So both the production and
the consumption forecasts end up being wrong.
The cost of alternatives sets a ceiling on the price of oil that is not much
higher than the current price (in the long run possibly even lower - as I
mentioned before there has been a claim that alcohol from organic waste
could be produced for $1/gallon). If the price of oil is just a little
higher than it is now, then extraction of oil sands (Canada has a vast
amount) becomes feasible. Not to mention the substitution of other energy
sources - solar, biomass, wind, coal, nuclear, etc. Those other sources
continue to become cheaper as the technology gets better and become more
feasible as the price of energy goes up - at some point the line crosses and
it's cheaper to put solar panels on your roof than it is to burn fuel to
make electricity and hot water and at that point no one ever has to burn
another barrel of petroleum again. If a barrel of palm oil or jatropha
biodiesel or biomass alcohol can be produced for say $150, then why would
anyone ever pay more than that for a barrel of petrodiesel or gasoline? The
main obstacle to nuclear power has been political but if people have the
choice between sitting in the dark or having a nuclear plant in their
backyard, suddenly the nuclear plant doesn't seem so bad.
I get the feeling that in the long run petroleum will be reserved as a
feedstock for petrochemicals and we will consider it stupid that such a
non-renewable resource was at one time literally burned up. But that won't
take place for many decades and we will have plenty of alternative ways of
economically generating energy by then
Belenos Clean Power Holding AG Biel/Bienne

Now Hayek brings Ackermann into his new ecologic venture:
Translated Quote from today's "Bieler Tagblatt"

Josef Ackermann.
The new environmental company of watches patron Nicolas Hayek was
named Belenos Clean Power Holding AG. Swiss citizen Josef Ackermann,
CEO of "Deutsche Bank" is foreseen as a prominent Member of the Board
of Directors.
Nicolas Hayek, president of the Bieler watch manufacturer Swatch
Group, moves forward with the formation of his new company for
alternative energies. The company, based in Biel/Bienne, has been
named Belenos Clean Power Holding AG,(see the trade register above).
The purpose of the company is to "participate actively in joint
ventures with domestic and foreign companies, especially in the areas
of power, propulsion systems, ecology and related fields".
According to the commercial register, Belenos Clean Power Holding AG
starts with a share capital of 21 million francs. Last August, as the
foundation of the energy company was announced, the foreseen initial
investment was indicated as being between 20 and 30 million francs.
Nicolas Hayek holds with the Swatch Group and Hayek Engineering AG 51
percent of Belenos. Other partners are the energy company Groupe E,
based in Neuchâtel & Fribourg, the Paul Scherrer Institute in Villigen
AG, a semi public research centre on natural sciences and engineering
specialties, as well as a not yet officially named Bank.
Nicolas Hayek, is the Chairman of the Board of Belenos.
What about George Clooney amd Claude Nicollier?
Not yet registered in the commercial register entry, are the US actor
George Clooney - he is this year nominated for an Oscar- and the Swiss
astronaut Claude Nicollier. Hayek had announced in an interview that
both were going to join on the board of directors of Belenos. Well
informed circles report that Josef Ackermann, head of Deutsche Bank,
is also willing to participate in the Board of Directors.
Belenos comes from the skeltic mythology and is supposed to be the
origini of Bienne (hence Biel in German)."
NB: out of the five Directors, only Nicolas Hayek, his son and
daughter have the right of signature. The other two, representative of
Groupe E and Schaerer Institute do not sign.
Looking forward to reading your comments!
In any case, I am still waiting for a conclusion on the discussion
about energy with regards to the ideal watch: should it be mechanical
or electricity animated?
