It is the current fashion, just like baggy trousers and large chains,
I doubt it is for resale as watches tend to depreciate heavily. On the
other hand they may just be too poor/lazy to get the bracelet resized.
Frank knows best, living in a sometime very hot and also very humid
area: the diameter of the arm and wrist increase. Also, sweat
accumulaes and from time to time you want to try and dry the bracelet
up as best possible, but not risk loosing or forgetting the watch
somewhere, that's how you come to open the two or three tier clasp,
letting the air cool your wrist.
I usually wear a leather strap gold watch and do it quite often, even
in Europe. It's neither a fashion nor a bad habit, just cooling off.
