Re: 24hr wrist watches (Cosmonaute style), Trias Cammouflage 1

The so called "NATO" (which are really more properly British G10) straps are
a much later invention and certainly an improvement on a one piece band
where the watch can slide around. Like anything else, they are not perfect
because you end up with a couple of layers of fabric under the watch, which
tends to bulk things up. But they would not have had these in the "trench"
period.

There was a time when it was sort of a preppy/Waspy affectation to wear a
watch (preferably a nice expensive gold watch) on a grosgrain ribbon band.
I guess it's part of the Wasp ironic fashion sense to wear a very expensive
watch on a $1 band.

Speaking of ironic, recently John Edwards was on the cover of Newsweek,
12/24, sleeves rolled up, tie loosened. On his wrist is not the Rolex or
Patek of the super sucessful plaintiff's lawyer (though he surely has a
drawerful of these somewhere in his 28,000 s.f. house) but some kind of
large all digital watch - maybe a Casio?

I've got a couple of drawers full of old (mostly NOS) watch bands
including several of the one piece pull through variety. There are also 2
piece bands with various fastening systems for wire or solid lug watches.
Modern (relatively speaking) Hirsh brand bands have glued ends. The best 1
piece leather bands have a taper so the watch gets locked in place. NATO
style bands are basically 1 piece with a second shorter piece to hold the
watch in place. A soft NATO style band is actually very comfortable.
