This Milus definitely has a steel plate on the back of the gold plated
case.

I remember once seeing a watchmaker unscrewing a back with a sucker
mounted on the end of a rod. What I can't remember is whether started
the job that way, or whether the sucker was being used just to finish
off the job of removing the back.

Are some watches made to be opened in this way? If so, what is the
name of the tool?

screw backs always have some method of keying a tool onto the back, the
only exception would be the screw backs or bezels on some american
pocket watch cases, but even then they are generally knurled to provide
grip for the fingers.

your watch is a snap back, if you cannot see a notch then you will need
to use a sharp blade, take the band off and see if there is a notch at
band lug ends, if not then what you may need to do is hold the case
supported on a wood block, place the knife at the joint and have a
helper tap the knife back with a small hammer while you hold everything
steady, that will generally get the back off.

and that movement does come out the front, you notice the dial is larger
than the case back, but the back does come off for assembly and regulation.

Thanks dAz. Did it with a Swiss Army knife, a hammer and a wooden
kitchen chopping block. And the wife.
