Re: Time Zones as politics

Perhaps you should ask the BBC to print a correction.

I do find it funny though that people found this post an excuse to rant on
about Bush, Iran, Pakistan, etc. No matter how evil or loony some leftist
dictator is, we are not permitted to criticize him in any way because after
all, the US and its allies are just as bad (in fact worse), so who are we to
criticize? So let's change the subject, immediately. Also, it's important
to attribute to Bush words and actions he hasn't really taken or spoken,
make up a funny accent for him and bring in gratutious references to his
religion (would you do the same for Ahmadinejad?) Is there a playbook where
all right thinking leftists receive the Party line on how to respond to any
insult to their icons?

And who are these people who came out of the woodwork to appear on
alt.horology? Are they monitoring all of Usenet for references to Chavez?

Interesting. According to the US Naval Observatory's time zone map
<http://aa.usno.navy.mil/graphics/TimeZoneMap2007.jpg> Venezuela
currently shares UTC +4 with half of Brazil, all of Chile, Paraguay,
Uruguay, and the Canadian Maritime Provinces. Conspicuously absent is
UTC +5 AKA Eastern Standard Time. Physically Venezuela appears to be
centered on 65 deg. W. longitude which would split the country into two
time zones (UTC +5 and UTC +4) if such things followed lines of
longitude.

It is not unheard of for countries to adopt time zones that better fit
their diurnal rhythms -- India, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives are UTC
-5:30; Thailand is UTC -6:30; Afghanistan is UTC -4:30; Iran is UTC
-3:30; Central Australia is UTC -9:30.

Are Americans so self-absorbed that they have to believe everything done
by all other world leaders is somehow a threat to them? Oh, sorry, my
mistake. Of course they are. Otherwise no sane person would be talking
about bombing Iran. Of course a plausible reason to bomb Iran is that
they (the terr-rists, that is) refuse to set their watches the way
Americans want them to. Set your watches the way we tell you or you
support the terr-rists and make the Baby Jesus cry!

Soon upon the establishment of the Greenwhich Meridian as the time
base for the whole world, French people established their own, the
Paris Meridian (gmt+1). This precedent should have inspired Chavez to
establish his own: the Chavez Meridian. This man lacks fantasy!
