Why is it dangerous to set a modern watch backwards?
I have been told that it's not a problem unless you have to turn it
back
past the date-change mechanism. As the bloke worked for Watches of
Switzerland, I'd say he knows what he is talking about.
I guess that's the answer I needed. Since I only have to go back about
nine hours to move to the Italian time zone, I'll be able to do that
one evening without changing the date. Perfect.
I just realised that I had transferred to watches the very firm
instructions I'd received from my father three or four decades ago
about NEVER EVER changing the time by winding in reverse on our very
elegant French brass-cased bevelled-glass mantel clock. Different
thing altogether of course. I'm not sure when this 'family' clock was
made, but it has inscribed on it this dedication to my great-
grandfather - 'a wedding present from his employers ..... Melbourne
1880'. So I guess the 1870s is the safest bet, unless it had been long
in stock!
It's been ticking away very happily ever since that presentation 127
years ago, and in fact I had it serviced only last month in its once-
every-five-years comprehensive check. Lovely things, clocks and
watches!
Having just had to set all my clocks back an hour thanks to the inanity
we
call daylight saving, I'd say that is a good call. I really do not wish
to
find out what it will do to my gears if I turn back my striking clock
past
the hour ....
1880 ... pre-federation ... that's practically First Fleet ....
21 years before Federation and still going strong! But here we just
put our time FORWARD an hour for daylight saving, not back ......
Ah, but I'm British.
We've always done things just a little differently ...
;-)
