I didn't realize the Tiffany relationship w/ Movado went that far back.
Of course if you go back far enough, it was once the norm for almost all watches to carry the names of the local jeweler on the dial , either exclusively or sometimes "co-branded" with the manufacturer, so Tiffany is not unique in that regard.
I wouldn't say that private label watches were ever the norm but are very commonly seen in American pocket watches from the 1880s into the 1920s and then petered out. There are quite a few private label Swiss movements with American jewelers' names from the early 1900s with no Swiss markings, Vacheron, Ulysse Nardin Agassiz and others. At that point the Swiss had not gained any respect in the American marketplace.
I happened across an Ebay listing for a 1920's Tiffany Hamilton the other day but question the provenance as the dial looked very clean for an 80 year old watch. The listing seems to have fallen off the face of Ebay.
