Ladies automatic watches are thick. Thick watches catch on shirt sleeves and are bothersome when wearing long sleeves and layers or in a wet suit. Will your wife really care if the watch is an auto or is that your fetish? AFIK, the only ladies auto chronometer is a Rolex which is out of your price range, comes with a metal band and is not well suited for sports.
Does your wife have any interest in timing her sports activities? If so then a digital chronograph for less than $100 is a good choice.
I realize that you want to get your wife the watch that you want to get her but is that the watch she really wants?
