So wig-wag between 9:00 and 12:00 doesn't work?

a lot of watches from the early 60s and older simply did not have a
quick set feature, companies like Rolex didn't seem to worry about it
and just plodded along with same design they used for years, they didn't
even design a new movement to have sweep seconds, they tacked on an
extra wheel on top of the train wheel bridge and bored out the centre wheel.

only the late 60s and 70s did the quickset feature became more common,
Seiko's 7002 auto date built from 1967-8? had the 3 position stem with
quick set date, it seems only after that the swiss started to do the
same, sometimes not well like the Omega 752 added a quick date setting
by allowing the setlever to move out a bit further and attached a
floating finger to flip the date around, problem was if you only wanted
to adjust the time and pulled the crown out too far you flip the date on
one.

some companies like orient still does, just adds a an extra pusher on
the case to quick set the date.

moving the hands back and forth to change the date can be simple to add
to most movements, Omega's earlier 500 auto dates just had a finger on
the 24hour wheel to flip the date around, only way to move the date
forward was to wind the hands forward as many times as needed, then the
next model out they changed the finger for a spring loaded one that
would allow the date wheel tooth to slip past and not reverse it, thus
allowing the date to changed by moving the hands 8 to 12 and back.

I can understand why a practical minded movement designer would not
think to add a quick-set date feature. Most people wore the same
watch day after day so advancing the date every few months was no big
deal. I wonder if popularity of the day complication was not what
pushed movement makers to think about easier methods for re-setting.

Japanese watch makers used the crown to quickset day and date in the
mid 1960's and possibly earlier.
