pilots own Breitlings? I've seen one being worn by Harrison Ford.)

I would say that it does not affect the cost of their watches at all:
in order to sustain and gain market shares, the laws of marketing are
pretty much the same in most luxury industries. Breitling just
concentrates more in aeronautics than other brands, and they do invest
more in hardware (planes) and ventures (air shows, round the world in
balloon, etc) than in glamourous "ambassadors". I do not know how many
pilots wear a Breitling; more important it that it seems to attract a
lot of would-like-to-be pilots who want to assess their dream, whose
dream for whatever reason did not come true.

Others buy SUVs in order to give themselves some adventurers' status,
respectivelly enhance their bruised egos.

Dreams and fullfilment and status assumption is what the world of
luxury is made of. Most people can live in shacks with little food and
wellness, as long as they can in whatever way enjoy and display some
luxury. Pretense helps overcoming life's hardships.
