Many Americans arrived seeking religious or political freedom or fleeing
oppression and not just to make a buck.

The Puritans, Amish, Quakers and other small religioous groups, maybe, but
the majority were attracted by the prospect of land ownership and vast
riches. That's leaving aside convicts and slaves as a source of involuntary
immigration.
