I guess you misunderstand me a little. I do not feel that I have to
have an "allegiance" to any particular country. I consider myself a
citizen of the world. Yes, in this particular case, I still feel more
attached to my country of origin than to the US. That's understandable,
however: I was born and raised there.

I
think this is very corrosive to our society and I wish there were better
ways to screen out folks like you. Normally I detest saying "go back where
you came from" because my family arrived in this country only a generation
ago, but in your case, go back where you came from.

Why do you want to "screen me out"? I have a higher education degree, I
highly-paid job, am an honest guy who obeys the laws of the land
(although I may disagree with many of them), and I am a productive
member of the society. If the US rejects people like me, that would be
an economic disaster. Remember, we pay for your retirement.

Gee isn't it funny that
you have some "circumstances" in your oh so wonderful home country that is
in all ways better than America.

I just happened to have found a job here, so I decided to stay. And I
never said that my country is better "in all the ways".

How many Americans (who are not fugitive
criminals) have "circumstances" that require them to live in your country or
even want to?

There are quite a few who live there because they have a good job. They
are free to move, so obviously they must have a reason to stay there.

You have basically told us that you took a false oath when
you became a US citizen. An oath is a solemn vow and not just words on a
piece of paper. Being an "American" involves a lot more than enjoying our
material prosperity. You sound like a guy who would be on the plane to his
"home country" with his wife and kids at the first sign of trouble - this is
exactly who we don't need here. My father was an immigrant and he always
taught his children and grandchildren that being an American involves not
just taking but giving back to the society. Even giving your life if
necessary.

Sorry, but I disagree with this. Not with the part about giving back to
society, but where this goes as far as giving a life. I would teach my
children to give their life for an IDEAL, not for a GOVERNMENT or
STATE.

If those who came before you had the same attitude as you, the
America that you are leaching off of would not exist

Excuse me? I work hard. I do not leach off.

- it would be some
semi-third worldish banana republic like Brasil or Argentina with no civic
tradition or it would be ruled by Germany and Japan or the Soviets.
America's greatness was achieved because those who came here (and we are all
immigrants, even the "native Americans") gave their heart and soul and blood
to this country and its ideals.

I think the situation was different, say, in WWII, then it is today in
Iraq. Why I would agree that fighting the Nazis was a worthy cause to
die for (and no, the Nazi would not have ruled the world, even without
the Americans, because the Soviet Union stopped them as well), I wonder
how you can justify sending young Americans to die in a lost war in
Iraq for no just cause. Tha't where my allegiance to a goverment stops.
If everybody thinks with their head instead of following what the
government tells you to do, there would have been a lot fewer wars and
the world would be a better place.

America is unique because it HAS ideals
which were set down from the very first day in its founding documents.

That's hardly unique. Almost every country has a constitution.

We
don't always achieve these ideals but at least we work toward them.

That's debatable. I would like to think that that's the case.
Unfortuntely, there are troubling signs. See recent developments in
terms of civil liberties. Do you think your average Congressman has the
values of the Constitution or the money and interests of the lobbyists
closer to his heart?

You
obviously will never understand this but America is such an immensely
accepting and enveloping place that your children will (unless you try
really hard to teach them to hate it, which is a sick thing to do) and if
not, their children and if not their grandchildren - unless you get back on
that plane and drag your kids back "home" at some point your offspring will
sprout as fully American as the corn no matter what you do.

I don't plan to teach my children to hate the US, but neither do I plan
to instillate in them mindless obedience and allegiance. I will try to
make them think independently. I certainly will want to show my
children that there are other coutries in this world, other points of
views, other cultures, and that this country is not the greatest in the
world (however meaningless this expression is).
